Visual Acoustics celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world’s greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman, who passed away in 2009, captured the work of nearly every modern and progressive architect since the 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry. His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern California’s modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public.

This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images.

Before the screening:
3 places – an architectural portfolio by Christian Aschman

For this first WAA evening, photographer Christian Aschman has gone through his portfolio and picked three projects. He will present a series of photos of the Paul Retter buildings (Bd Royal / Forum Royal 2) taken in 2021 when he co-authored a book about the architect. Then he will discuss a series of photos he was commissioned to take by the Centre national de l’audiovisuel in 2018 to document the Argrocenter in Mersch before its demolition. Finally, he will show a series titled the space in between on which he worked in 2014 during a residency in Tokyo.
